May as well explain the recommendations too...
Music:
Faith No More: Funky pop/rock/metal that grooves. Quirky, funny, weird. Albums: Angel Dust, The Real Thing
Devin Townsend: Some bipolar, skulleted Canadian dude that happens to make amazing, epic, layered, progressive rock/metal. Sings, plays guitar, keyboards, samples, and produces, and he is a virtuoso at it all. Albums: Terria (If you take heed to one of my recommendations, let it be this album), Ocean Machine, Synchestra.
Explosions in the Sky: Post-Rock based around clean, lazy arpeggios with the usual build up/crescendo/denoument thing. Unforced and pleasant. Album: The Earth is not a Cold Dead Place
Mastodon: Crushing sludge/thrash metal with a little country, jazz fusion, and prog thrown in for good measure. The drumming is ungodly, and the riffs, oh, holy FUCK those riffs. Albums: Remission, Leviathan.
Books:
"In Cold Blood" - Truman Capote. My favourtie book. Nonfiction crime drama; the prose is beautiful. Contains what I think is the most stunning paragraph ever committed to paper.
Anything Ian McEwan, as he has a complete mastery over the written word. He is able to describe the most innocuous, mundane occurences fascinatingly. As does Hemmingway in his simplicity and economy.
"Da Vinci Code" - Dan Brown. Just kidding! This book fucking sucks. Awful prose, childish & cliched writing devices, awkward dialogue. A glorified Hardy Boys novel. Well, that's not very fair; at least the Hardy Boys were fun to read. |
